Opened in 1971,
Wooranna Park is a Government primary school servicing the community of
North Dandenong. The 346 pupils attending the school in 2009 come from
racially and culturally diverse backgrounds. This diversity adds a
richness to the learning environment. Staff and parents are proud of the
friendly working atmosphere which pervades the school. A Before School
/ After School Care Program is supported from School funds in order to
assist working parents.
The school's philosophy is based on the need to maximise children's
options, present and future, so that they might achieve social
flexibility, economic well being and personal satisfaction.
It is the aim of the school to promote academic
excellence and in so doing develop lively, enquiring minds with powers of
sound judgement:
* creative self expression
* physical and mental health
* a sense of self worth and respect for others
* an appreciation of the cultural diversity of our society
* a commitment to acceptable personal and social values
* a sense of national identity.
The school offers a comprehensive program of learning through an
integrated curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science, Technology,
Health and Physical Education, The Arts, Studies of Society and the
Environment, and Languages Other Than English (Japanese). The curriculum
is further enriched by a wide variety of special programs and activities
which address the needs of our pupils. Extension programs for
academically, athletically and artistically talented children are
regarded as a priority.
All teachers use an integrated studies approach, with units of work
planned using Bloom's Taxonomy, DeBono's Six Thinking Hats, Gardner's
Multiple Intelligences and the Victorian Curriculum Standards Framework.
Wherever possible study units are required to be open ended in order to
facilitate the varying abilities of students. The development of
enabling skills, along with creative and critical thinking, creativity,
problem solving, philosophical reasoning, and cooperative learning are
all school priorities. The School maintains very successful swimming,
camping, interschool sport, transition and student wellbeing programs and
children in the Senior School present an annual production, as well as
performing regularly in community Arts events.
Over the past six years the school council has embarked on an
extensive building program to create a more visually stimulating and
contemporary learning environment for students. The children in
the Year 5/6 Autonomous Learning unit are grouped into multi-age classes. All
teachers work collaboratively in team teaching units, so as to assist in
the role modelling of collaborative skills and to facilitate the
provision of a differentiated curriculum.
The school also gives priority to involving students in a variety
of 'real life' activities that engage them in learning and discovering
their individual passions . To this end students from Wooranna Park
participate in the following 'challenge' activities: · Human powered Vehicle
· Future problem solving · Tournament of Minds · Solar Boat Challenge
· Science talent Search · Maths Talent Quest · RACV, Energy Breakthrough, (Push Cart competition and Innovations In
Technology.)
In our endeavours to provide our students with a more true to life
curriculum, Wooranna Park has also made a conscious effort to change the
nature of student learning. The traditional teacher dominated classroom,
with its 'lock / step' approach to curriculum development and emphasis
on factual knowledge, is no longer regarded as the best learning
environment for students. The introduction of the Autonomous Learning
Unit for Year 5 & 6 students in 1997 was designed to encourage students
to achieve their full potential and to accept more responsibility for
their own learning. The School received one of three 'Excellence in
Education Awards' presented by the Victorian Association for Gifted and
Talented in 1997.
As our school changes, so must our teachers. In recent years the
school has heavily supported senior members of the teaching staff
attending overseas conferences in the USA, England, Italy and Singapore. The knowledge they
have gained has proven invaluable in the school's educational journey.
As a former 'Self Governing School' and a 'Specialist Centre'
focusing on the development of autonomous learning, Wooranna Park is a
lighthouse for the promotion of contemporary schooling practices. The
school caters for a steady stream of visiting educators and in previous
years up to eighteen hundred students from other schools have attended
Gifted and Talented Workshops conducted by here. As such, Wooranna
Park is in a unique position to influence the learning programs of both
individual students and other schools.
Since 1996, Wooranna Park Primary School has
endeavoured to create a learning
environment for students that prepares them to live in a rapidly
changing world, caters for their personal needs and passions, and
excites their thirst for learning. |
