At Wooranna Park Primary School we are committed to a school wide positive behaviour support (SWPBS). This is an evidence-based framework for Victorian government schools, aimed at creating a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. This document outlines the essential features a school must commit to when implementing a school wide positive behaviour support.
Our school wide approach helps to ensure teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:
Our students know these expectations as our school's basics:
These basics are captured in our school's Matrix of Expectations.
If a student is not demonstrating the expected behaviours, we use our Correction Plan consistently across the school. This approach gives students multiple opportunities to make a good choice in line with our Matrix of Expectations.
The graphics below are displayed in every learning space as a visual reminder of the steps staff will take if a student is not demonstrating our school wide expectations, alongside our Acknowledgement Plan outlining the steps we enact when students are enacting the expectations. Our focus is geared towards supporting students to take responsibility for restoring relationships, mindset and harm.
In the classroom and playground, our students love to be acknowledged with raffle tickets, house points and Puggles points. There is always a lot of excitement each week to find out who our Grade of the Week is and who has been drawn out of our raffle ticket barrel! Our staff make every effort to send positive messages home to families, at least once a term, and our Principal enjoys seeing students with their work to acknowledge them with a Principal Postcard. At the end of the term, we also celebrate students' effort and learning growth at our Golden Assembly.
When responding to problem behaviour, the staff member first determines if the problem behaviour is major or minor. Minor Behaviours are managed by staff members at the time the incident occurred. Follow up and consequences are given by the teacher that is dealing with the incident. Major Behaviours are behaviours that poses an immediate safety risk to students and/or staff. Leadership are contacted immediately, and consequences are given and managed by member of the Leadership team, in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
